To best capture the full breadth, depth, and general radical-ness of ’90s cinema (“radical” in both the political and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles senses of the word), IndieWire polled its staff and most Repeated contributors for their favorite films with the ten years.

I might spoil if I elaborated more than that, but let's just say that there was a plot massage sex component shoved in, that should have been left out. Or at least done differently. Even although it absolutely was small, and was kind of poignant for the development of the remainder of the movie, IMO, it cracked that basic, amature porn fragile feel and tainted it with a cliché melodrama-plot device. And they didn't even make use of your whole thing and just brushed it away.

Nearly 30 years later, “Weird Days” is a challenging watch because of the onscreen brutality against Black folks and women, and because through today’s cynical eyes we know such footage rarely enacts the change desired. Even so, vporn Bigelow’s alluring and visually arresting film continues to enrapture because it so perfectly captures the misplaced hope of its time. —RD
